Install AcelleMail on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS

This guide has moved. The install walkthrough for any server, an Ubuntu 24.04 server included, is Install AcelleMail and Get Started.

This guide has moved

👉 Please read the install guide here: Install AcelleMail and Get Started.

That one guide applies to any server, an Ubuntu 24.04 server included. It walks through the installation wizard step by step (system check, site and admin details, database, cron job) and then the first sending server and plan. It is the install walkthrough we keep current, so follow it instead of a server-specific copy that drifts out of date.

we use hetzner instead of do — same ubuntu image, identical install. probably $4/mo cheaper. the ptr record on hetzner requires opening a support ticket but they respond same-day.

Hetzner works fine, the article is DO-flavored only because that's what I had open when I wrote it. Nothing in the install steps is provider-specific past "Ubuntu 24.04 with root". One note on the PTR: on Hetzner Cloud you can usually set rDNS yourself from the server's Networking tab without a ticket. If yours needed a ticket you're probably on a Robot dedicated box, which is a different panel. Worth checking before you wait a day. I'll add a short "provider notes" bit covering rDNS on both, since PTR is the thing that actually decides whether your first sends land.

Is the install wizard skipable for automated deploys? Asking because we Terraform our infra and clicking through a wizard is awkward

No headless flag yet, the wizard is the only supported fresh install. Workaround is to run it once on a throwaway box and treat the resulting .env plus DB as your artifact.

For anyone using systemd-resolved (Ubuntu 22+): set DNSStubListener=no in /etc/systemd/resolved.conf before installing. Otherwise port 53 conflicts when you eventually run a bounce handler.

Installed on a $12/mo DigitalOcean droplet for our 30k-subscriber list. Performance has been fine. Memory peaks around 1.6 GB during batch sends; comfortable on 2GB.

Followed this on Ubuntu 24.04 last week. Zero issues. The php-imap and php-sqlite3 notes saved me a wizard-error round-trip...

any reason to use mariadb over mysql 8? we default to mariadb everywhere but i see most acelle install guides use mysql.
    1. Admin
No real reason, MariaDB is fine. The guides say MySQL 8 mostly because that's what we test on, not because anything in the app depends on it. It's a stock Laravel schema, no MySQL-specific features, and we have plenty of installs running MariaDB. Two things worth checking on your side: use utf8mb4 with utf8mb4_unicode_ci for the database (subscriber names and campaign subjects will mangle otherwise), and stay on a reasonably recent MariaDB. Very old versions get grumpy about index key length on the longer varchar columns during migration. If you hit anything MariaDB-specific during install, tell me the version and the error and I'll add a note to the article. Right now it doesn't mention MariaDB at all, which is probably why the question comes up.
